"Having heard the words of Janaka , the venerable sage Viswamitra told the king to show the bow to Rama".

Balakanda
Sixty Seventh Sarga

Having heard the words of Janaka , the venerable sage Viswamitra told the king to show the bow to Rama.

Then the king ordered his assistants to bring that celestial bow decorated with scented garlands. Thus ordered by Janaka the ministers went to the city . As ordered by the king , keeping the bow in the front they started back. Five thousand persons who are very strong with great difficulty brought the container holding the bow. The kings ministers having brought that container holding the bow , spoke to Janaka who is comparable to Devas. "Oh Best of kings ! Oh Rajan ! Oh King of Mithila , this bow revered by all kings can be shown as you please".

Having heard their words , the king with folded hands spoke to venerable Viswamitra as well as Rama and Lakshmana.
"O Brahman ! This bow has been worshipped by all our ancestors. Earlier even powerful kings were unable to take aim with this bow. In the ranks of Suras, Asuras Rakshasas, Gandharvas, Yakshas , Kinnaras or the great Serpents, there were none who were able to take aim or string the bow , or pull the strings or even lift the bow . What to talk of ordinary men. Oh Great one ! O best of Sages! that best of bows has been brought to show to these princes. "

Hearing those words of Janaka, the righteous Viswamitra spoke to Rama as follows . " Dear Rama see the bow ".

Following the words of that Brahmarshi , Rama went near the container holding the bow . Then after looking at the bow he spoke. " O Brahman ! I am touching to the bow with my hand . I will try to take aim with the same"

Then the king and the sage said " go ahead ".

Following the words of the sage, even as thousands of kings etc were looking on the best of men held the bow in the middle with ease and then took aim at that time the bow broke at the middle.

The sound made by the breaking of bow was like the stunning sound of thunder. The earth shook. The mountains seemed to break apart. Apart from the venerable sage, the King , Rama and Lakshmana everybody else was stunned by the sound of the breaking bow and fell down. The people recovered from the stunning effect. The king too with his apprehensions allayed spoke to the venerable and learned sage with folded hands.

Janaka spoke

" Oh Bhagavan ! I have seen the valor of Rama, the son of Dasaratha , which is wonderful, beyond imagination and beyond expectations. Sita having obtained Rama as her husband, will enhance the prestige of Janaka's lineage. Oh Kausika ! My vow to give her to the best among men has now been redeemed. Sita, dear to my heart, is certainly to be given to Rama. Oh Brahman! May all be auspicious with you. O Kausika with your permission my ministers will go on fast chariots quickly to Ayodhya. With respectful words they will tell about winning the bride. They will bring the king to our city. They will tell the king about the two princes who are under the protection of the sage. The delighted King will be brought here".

Then Kausika said "Let it be so". Then the king spoke to the ministers.

Then the righteous King sent his experienced ministers to the city of Ayodhya to tell the about all the happenings to the King (of Ayodhya).

Thus ends the Sarga sixty seven of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayana
